National companies like Evolve and Vacasa certainly can’t offer this. The reason for this lack tends to be a combination of poor management, but also, more importantly, the unwillingness to be selective with the properties and owners they take on. As a general rule, people choose to rent a home instead of a hotel because they value being able to cook their own meals. This means two things: well-stocked kitchens are a must and dinner table seating must be equal to or greater than the number the home sleeps. For many guests, the inability to feed everyone at a table is a deal breaker.
It’s much easier to stay in a home with kids than at a hotel, and this is what makes vacation rentals appealing for families. AirBnb has on its amenities checklist an entire section devoted to “Family Amenities,” because they recognize that a large portion of its clientele are families traveling with children. A place for children to sleep and play should be included in the list of essential amenities. Homes that are set up for kids and dogs will have the largest appeal for our market.
